Podsumowanie

One of the twelve states that signed the North Atlantic Treaty in Washington on 4 April 1949, so its membership is not an accession but the treaty itself. Membership carries the mutual-defence commitment of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, under which an armed attack against one ally is treated as an attack against them all. The United States frames the battlegroup in Poland and has held the Supreme Allied Commander Europe appointment continuously. This record states the membership and its date; it says nothing about how much this state spends, what it contributes, or how reliable any party considers it — none of which membership establishes.

• The United States’ March 2026 posture testimony states that Europe must assume primary responsibility for its own conventional defence while the United States remains committed to Article 5 and to NATO; that is a stated position, carried on the actor’s posture block, and membership does not grade it.
