- Australia's relevance to this system is deferred rather than immediate. The 2020s brought a defence review that reoriented the force toward denial and long-range strike, the AUKUS partnership signed in 2021, and a nuclear submarine programme whose first Australian-built boats arrive in the 2040s — a set of decisions that changes the regional balance on a timescale longer than most of the scenarios written about Taiwan. In the meantime the contribution is presence, exercises, intelligence relationships and the hosting arrangements that give US forces depth south of the first island chain. Canberra has consistently declined to say what it would do in a Taiwan contingency, and Beijing has used trade coercion against Australia before — which is itself a documented instance of the economic instrument this module tracks.
