Germany and Poland signed a defence agreement in Warsaw on 17 June 2026 that replaces and widens their 2011 framework, according to the German defence ministry: joint exercises, logistics and transit support, Baltic maritime security and air defence, framed around the eastern flank.

Un arrangement symétrique : il se lit de la même façon des deux côtés. Rédigé une seule fois, sur une seule fiche.

Synthèse

On 17 June 2026 the German and Polish defence ministers, Boris Pistorius and Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, signed a bilateral defence agreement in Warsaw. The German defence ministry describes it as replacing and expanding the framework arrangement of October 2011. Its stated fields are joint exercises, mutual logistical support and easier transit of troops and materiel, the protection of critical infrastructure and sea lanes in the Baltic, and air-defence cooperation including the Patriot system and interceptor production, alongside armaments and research. The ministry names the November 2026 Grand Eagle exercise, which moves German forces through Poland to Lithuania, as an example of the cooperation.

Pourquoi c’est important

Germany's brigade in Lithuania depends on moving through Poland, and the two states are the flank's largest European spenders on land forces and air defence. A framework that writes transit, logistics and Baltic maritime security into one bilateral instrument is part of the reinforcement depth this module describes. What the agreement obliges in practice is not published, and a signed framework is not a capability.

Accords

  • German–Polish defence agreement · signé le 2026-06-17

Signed in Warsaw by the two defence ministers. Replaces the October 2011 framework arrangement, per the German defence ministry.

  • German–Polish framework arrangement on defence cooperation · signé le 2011-10 · ended 2026-06-17

Ce qui reste inconnu

  • The agreement text was not read. Whether it restates the mutual-assistance clauses of the North Atlantic Treaty or the EU treaty, as some reporting says, is not established here, and neither is its ratification or entry into force.
  • One report describes a jointly led command rotating every four years; it rests on a single outlet and is not carried.
