- Historique notable
- The IDF's intelligence directorate since 1953, one of three Israeli intelligence services beside the Mossad and the internal security service. Its place in this module is fixed by two dates. In June 2025 the twelve-day war opened with strikes that killed senior Iranian commanders and scientists at known locations; on 28 February 2026 the Congressional Research Service attributes to Israel the strike that killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and, in the campaign's first weeks, dozens of senior military and political figures. Which service produced which targeting is not public and is not authored; what is public is that a campaign that could find those people at those moments was an intelligence campaign first. The directorate's own failure before October 2023, examined by Israel's own inquiries, is part of the same record and is noted here because a profile that carried only successes would read as propaganda.
- Points forts
- Demonstrated penetration of the Iranian leadership and command system twice in nine months, and integration with the air force's strike cycle that public accounts describe as continuous rather than sequential.
- Limites
- A leadership-targeting achievement is not repeatable on demand: the successor leadership and the unfilled posts are harder to characterise than the structure that was struck, and the Iranian arrests announced since are aimed at exactly the access that made 2025 and 2026 possible. Nothing about the directorate's own structure is authored.
