Nature de ce terrain
The southern Red Sea narrows to the Strait of Bab el-Mandeb between Yemen and the Horn of Africa, the outlet for Saudi Arabia's Red Sea terminals and for Suez-bound traffic. Its Yemeni shore passed to the Houthi movement in September 2026; the strait itself stayed open, and the module keeps those two facts apart.

Caractère physique
- Terrain dominant
- Une mer longue et étroite entre les rives arabe et africaine, bordée de récifs et d’îles, qui se resserre à son extrémité sud en un détroit d’environ trente kilomètres de large entre Ras Menheli, au Yémen, et Ras Siyyan, à Djibouti. L’île de Perim (Mayyun) se trouve dans le détroit et le divise en deux chenaux : un chenal oriental étroit contre la rive yéménite et un chenal occidental plus large, où passent les couloirs de séparation du trafic. Au nord du détroit, la côte yéménite est une plaine basse et chaude — la Tihama — dont Hodeidah est le port principal et Mokha le port historique ; les îles Hanish et Zuqar se trouvent au large. Côté saoudien, la côte s’élève de Jazan au sud jusqu’au terminal de Yanbu et au port de Djeddah.
- Implications pour la mobilité
- The strait is the only southern exit from the Red Sea, and the Suez Canal the only northern one; everything that leaves Yanbu for Asia passes Bab el-Mandeb unless it takes the Cape. The July 2026 Houthi blockade of shipping to and from Saudi ports cut transits by about a quarter and sent Saudi Asia-bound crude north through Suez instead, turning a voyage of about twenty-four days into one of about fifty-four. The wider channel lies west of Perim, so presence on the island changes who is nearest the lanes, not whether they are usable; the module records the advance and does not infer a closure from it.

- Eau et obstacles naturels
- Bab el-Mandeb is the barrier, and it has two shores: Yemen on one side, Djibouti and Eritrea on the other, with Perim between. That is why a change of hands on the Yemeni side is presence rather than control — the western channel and the African shore are not affected by it. Inside the Red Sea the reef belts on both coasts keep deep-draught traffic to the central channel.
- Urbanisation et peuplement
- Sparse on the Yemeni side outside Hodeidah, the country's principal Red Sea port and the entry for most of its imports; Mokha is small and Perim uninhabited but for garrisons. The Saudi side carries Jeddah, the kingdom's largest Red Sea city, the Yanbu industrial city and Jazan's refinery and economic city in the south, all within reach of the strike waves of 2026.

The Red Sea is where the Hormuz problem goes when it leaves the Gulf. The east–west pipeline was built so that Saudi crude could avoid one contested strait, and it delivers that crude to a sea whose southern exit is contested in its own right by a movement that has declared Saudi shipping its exception. From July 2026 the region's principal Hormuz alternative therefore depended on a waterway that was itself blockaded for the ships it served, and from 10 September on a line that was itself shut; the two chokepoints are one coupled system, and this record is the geography of the second half of it.
Observé
The Houthi movement declared a blockade of shipping to and from Saudi ports in July 2026; transits fell by about a quarter. On 10–11 September it took Mokha, Dhubab, Perim and Zuqar. No independently observed interference with non-Saudi shipping from the new positions has been read, and Al Jazeera reported no official Houthi announcement of control over the strait.

Presence on the Yemeni shore is a change in who is nearest the lanes and not a change in whether they are usable, and the module will keep that distinction until an act against a vessel is observed. What the advance does establish is that the Hormuz bypass's outlet is now held on one side by the party that has declared its blockade.
