Synthèse

Iran took control of Abu Musa and the Greater and Lesser Tunbs in 1971, in the period of the British withdrawal from the Gulf and the formation of the United Arab Emirates. The UAE claims the islands; Iran administers them and rejects the claim. The dispute is one of the oldest continuously live structures in this module: it has persisted through the 1979 revolution, the Iran–Iraq war, the 2016 downgrade of relations, the 2022 normalisation of much of the Gulf's Iran policy and the 2026 war. What each party claims belongs on its own record, and this module states the existence and the parties of the dispute rather than adjudicating it. It is symmetric because both parties are party to it.

Pourquoi c’est important

It is the clearest demonstration in the module that the Iran–Gulf system is not reducible to the current war. A dispute that has outlasted five decades of every other kind of change is a structural feature of the region, and a module that recorded only 2026 would not contain it.
