Battlefield role

Area air defence and multi-role surface combat, providing escort and presence capability including beyond the first island chain.

Strengths

Large missile capacity, modern sensors and long endurance, in a class being produced at a rate few navies could match. The production rate matters more strategically than any individual ship's capability.

Limitations

Untested in combat, and large surface combatants are themselves increasingly vulnerable to the anti-ship missiles that Taiwan and others are investing in — the same logic that pushed Taiwan away from large warships. Vigil publishes no fleet numbers, basing or deployment information.

Derived: a participant organisation in these campaigns carries a typed equipment association with this system. That is not the same as documented use of the system in the campaign itself.

Visual identification

A very large destroyer with a continuous, smoothly faired hull-to-superstructure line and an enclosed integrated mast — no separate lattice structures anywhere, which is what distinguishes it at a glance from every earlier Chinese destroyer. Two large vertical launch arrays, forward and amidships.

Documented conflict use

Commissioned in series since 2020 and reported in the theatre exercises announced around Taiwan from August 2022 onward, as well as in deployments beyond the first island chain reported by Japan and others. Vigil records reported presence and publishes no counts, dispositions, routes or armament loadouts.
