Record
Conflict relevance
This is the catalogue's single record for this system. It is relevant to the module below; each module's Force Atlas shows how it is used there.
Battlefield role
Escort, patrol and area presence. In this module its role is presence: it is the hull type most often present in the daily naval detections Taiwan publishes, and the one that makes sustained multi-axis activity around the island affordable in a way that larger combatants would not be.
Strengths
Numerous, comparatively cheap and produced in long series, which is what allows presence to be sustained rather than performed. Capable enough for escort and patrol without consuming a first-rate hull to do it. The newer Type 054B is larger with improved sensors, and its entry into service extends the same logic rather than changing it.
Limitations
A frigate is a general-purpose ship and is not the platform any published analysis treats as decisive in a high-end engagement; against a peer opponent it is escort rather than main effort. Anti-submarine warfare — a principal frigate task — is widely assessed as a relative weakness of the PLA Navy as a whole. Hull counts are a poor proxy for capability and this module does not publish them or treat them as one.
Campaign relevance
Derived: a participant organisation in these campaigns carries a typed equipment association with this system. That is not the same as documented use of the system in the campaign itself.

Visual identification
A clean-lined frigate of around four thousand tonnes with a single main gun forward, a vertical launch array immediately behind it, angled superstructure faces and a helicopter hangar aft. The proportions are conventional and unremarkable, which is the point: it is easy to confuse with Western frigates of the same generation and much less distinctive than the large destroyers it escorts.
Documented conflict use
Present in the naval activity around Taiwan that the island's defence ministry reports daily, and in the large theatre exercises announced by the Eastern Theater Command from August 2022 onward. Vigil records that vessels of this type are reported present and publishes no counts, no dispositions, no routes and no patrol patterns.
