- The People's Protection Units and the Women's Protection Units grew out of the PYD movement family in 2011–2012, defended Kobani in 2014–15 in the battle that made them the coalition's partner, and became the disciplined core around which the SDF was built in 2015. Türkiye regards them as an extension of the PKK and has demanded their dissolution as an autonomous armed force throughout the transition — a demand that runs through the implementation of the January 2026 agreement, to which Ankara is not a party. With the SDF's brigades integrated into a Ministry of Defence division and the SDF itself declared dissolved in August 2026, the YPG's institutional existence is what is now unresolved: the women's formations are reported as heading to the Interior Ministry as a counter-terrorism force rather than to Defence, and Türkiye removed a former YPG and SDF commander from its wanted list on 14 August 2026 — the first observable case of Ankara applying its test to a named individual rather than to the organisation.
