Allgemeines Tätigkeitsfeld: Nationwide by design, with the exposure concentrated where the war is: the Tillabéri and Tahoua districts in the west, and the desert north around Agadez and Arlit where the guard escorts and garrisons rather than fights. Nothing about strength or dispositions is authored.
Bemerkenswerte Geschichte: Descended from the colonial-era goum and the Republican Guard, and reorganised as the National Guard in 1997 as the third armed corps beside the army and the gendarmerie on the French Sahelian pattern: a force of the interior ministry that guards prefectures, prisons, borders and mining convoys and provides the state's presence in districts the army does not hold. Since 2012 its rural posts have been the softest state targets in the Liptako, and the July 2023 coup put the presidential guard — a separate formation — rather than this corps at the centre of power. In the August 2026 mutiny the guard's role is not established; the mutineers came from army units of the western garrisons.
Stärken: A distributed presence the army cannot replicate, a mining-escort role that ties it to the state's principal export, and a legal status as part of the armed forces.
