Allgemeines Tätigkeitsfeld: Nationwide in territorial brigades, with the exposure concentrated in Tillabéri and Tahoua in the west and on the southern corridors. Nothing about strength or dispositions is authored.
Bemerkenswerte Geschichte: A French-pattern gendarmerie since independence, part of the armed forces under the defence ministry and answering to the interior ministry for policing, beside the National Guard's territorial and custodial role. The war that reached Niger's west from 2017 turned its brigades into the softest state targets in the Liptako, and the departure of the French and American forces in 2023–24 removed the air cover and intelligence those posts had relied on. In the August 2026 mutiny the gendarmerie's role is not established; the reporting names army units from Niamey, Ouallam, Téra and Dosso.
Stärken: Distributed presence, the legal policing mandate the army lacks, and the road-security function the rerouted import corridors depend on.
