Catholicos Karekin II, head of the Armenian Apostolic Church, and six other senior clerics appeared in court on 6 August 2026 on criminal charges arising from alleged failure to comply with a court order to reinstate a defrocked bishop. Shortly after the hearing opened, counsel for the Catholicos said the presiding judge had recused himself, citing his professional connection to one of the defence lawyers; the case passes to another judge, who is to schedule a new hearing.
