The Sudanian belt between Bamako and the Atlantic ports, carrying Mali's fuel corridor, its main railway and its industrial goldfields on the same narrow band of ground. It is the country's economic spine, and until 2025 it was the part of Mali the war had not reached.

The western route to the Atlantic and the axis on which the heaviest reported tanker losses occurred from late 2025. There is no parallel alignment: the corridor is the geography, not a choice within it.

Kayes

The regional centre where the corridor, the railway, the river and the gold economy converge, and where fuel availability is one of the reported measures of the blockade.

Kita

Rail and road town on the Bamako–Kayes stretch, attacked during the 2025 western offensive — evidence that the campaign targets the corridor along its length rather than only at its ends.

The goldfield district at the Senegalese border, where the state's fiscal base and the corridor's insecurity meet on the same feeder roads.

Wooded Sudanian savanna in the south, thinning to drier Sahelian ground toward the Mauritanian border in the north. The Kayes region covers some 63,200 square kilometres and touches Mauritania, Senegal and Guinea. The Bafing and Bakoy meet at Bafoulabé to form the Senegal river, which runs north-west past Kayes toward the coast. Gold occurs along the Birimian volcanic belt running through Kayes, Koulikoro and Sikasso; the Kéniéba cercle holds the Malian part of the historic Bambouk goldfields.
Movement here is easier than anywhere else in the country and more concentrated. The savanna offers cover that the north does not, and the road and rail network is the densest in Mali — but the practical effect is that long-distance movement follows a small number of arteries, principally Route Nationale 1 and the Dakar–Niger railway, through terrain where an ambusher can approach unseen. That combination is the single fact that makes the corridor a target: cover for the attacker, concentration for the target, and no alternative alignment to shift to.
A single wet season, roughly June to October, heavier than in the north and centre. Rain degrades unpaved feeder roads and can isolate mining and farming areas from the main routes for periods, while leaving the trunk corridor usable. Vegetation is at its densest at the end of the rains, which is also when concealment near the roads is greatest — a seasonal shift in the corridor's exposure rather than in its capacity.
The Senegal river system is the region's organising feature and, historically, its route to the coast: the railway was built in the early twentieth century precisely to bypass river trade, and Kayes grew as the commercial centre of that shift. The Manantali dam on the Bafing is the region's principal engineered water structure. None of this constitutes a militarily significant barrier; the rivers matter here as economic geography, not as obstacles.
Low outside the corridor and dense along it. Kayes, Kita, Kéniéba and Koulikoro sit on or near the same axis, with mining settlement — much of it artisanal and informal — scattered through the goldfields between them. The population that matters strategically is strung along the artery, which is also why pressure on the artery is felt as pressure on the region.

This is the terrain that turns an insurgency into an economic instrument. Three things sit on one band of ground: the corridor carrying the great majority of Mali's fuel imports, the railway that is the country's only non-road link to a port, and the industrial and artisanal goldfields that provide roughly four fifths of export earnings and the fiscal base of the state. Attacks anywhere along that band reach the national economy, and because the geography is landlocked, no realignment exists to absorb the pressure — redundancy runs between the Senegalese, Ivorian and Guinean routes and stops there. It is also the region the war reached last: JNIM's western campaign in 2025 was the demonstration that no part of the country was structurally out of range, and it is why the module treats the west as an economic front rather than a rear area.

From 2024 the documented pattern in the west moved from occasional incidents to coordinated attacks on Kayes and neighbouring towns in July 2025, then to systematic interdiction of tanker convoys on the Dakar corridor from September 2025, with attacks in the Kita cercle indicating pressure along the corridor's length.

The west was not chosen for its terrain but for what crosses it. The ground makes interdiction easy and concentration unavoidable; the value of the target is economic. That distinction matters, because it implies the pressure here responds to political and economic decisions rather than to the seasonal and logistical limits that shape the northern fight.

  • Artisanal mining settlement in the goldfields is extensive, informal and not mapped in any public source Vigil can cite, so this record describes the sector's presence in the terrain without locating any part of it.
  • Freight volumes and fuel throughput on the corridor are not published in a form that allows the effect of a given attack to be measured; corridor pressure is inferred from prices, queues and reported convoy losses.

Whether pressure stays on the road or moves onto the goldfields is the distinction that matters: the first taxes the economy, the second attacks the state's revenue directly, and the two have different implications for how long the government can absorb it.

The Dakar–Bamako line has not worked as a reliable freight route for years. Any credible move to restore it would change the corridor's vulnerability more than any security measure on the road would.
