Numbers of US forces in Europe are quoted widely and move with rotations and policy decisions. Vigil publishes such a figure only from a source it has read, with the date that source carries. None was established during verification, so the record says so rather than carrying a number whose vintage it cannot state. The March 2026 testimony states no total, and the reported congressional floor on US forces in Europe in the fiscal 2026 authorisation was not read in the statute.
What the United States says it wants from the flank

It assesses Russia as "a persistent but manageable threat to NATO's eastern front for the foreseeable future", calls for a "NATO 3.0" refocused as a defensive alliance on the European continent, calls the five per cent commitment "the new global standard", and names Poland, Germany and Finland as "model allies" whose cooperation, arms sales and intelligence sharing the Department will prioritise. Each of those is a stated position and is carried on the posture block as one.

حتى 2026-03-18The same testimony records that a brigade combat team forward-deployed to Romania since 2022 was redeployed and not backfilled, on the Secretary's decision after consultation with the EUCOM commander, and attributes the decision to allied progress on the flank — including the Forward Land Forces battlegroups — "not as a disengagement from Europe, but as a demonstration of allied progress". It is the module's one observed reduction in US presence on the flank stated by the United States itself, and it is recorded as the Department's own reasoning rather than as a finding about why it happened. The V Corps forward elements permanently stationed in Poland since 2022 and the US-led battlegroup there are unaffected by it on any source read.
