- Bahrain's defence force is a small army, air force, navy and royal guard on an island whose military significance lies elsewhere: the Naval Support Activity at Manama is the headquarters of United States Naval Forces Central Command and the Fifth Fleet, of the 47-nation Combined Maritime Forces, and of the International Maritime Security Construct, and the British navy's own Gulf facility sits beside them. The kingdom is a member of every one of those structures and was among the six states attacked from February 2026; Iranian retaliatory strikes on 1–2 September 2026 included facilities in Bahrain. Its own navy works alongside the coalition headquarters in the same harbour, which is the one place in the Gulf where the host's forces and the guest's are physically inseparable.
