A rebel offensive out of Idlib in late November 2024 took Aleppo within days, cascaded down the western corridor, and ended the Assad era on 8 December without a battle for Damascus. It was decided by the simultaneous withdrawal of every external prop and by an army that would not fight.
This campaign is the module's origin point. The transitional government, the unresolved northeast, the Turkish and Israeli files, the Russian basing negotiation and the entire accountability question all date from these eleven days. It also disproved the settled reading of the conflict: the regime had been treated since 2020 as having survived the war, and it turned out to have survived the war and not the peace. Every actor's 2025 and 2026 position was improvised from that surprise, which is why the transition has been fast, uneven and consolidation-first.

On 27 November 2024 Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and allied factions attacked out of Idlib. Aleppo fell within days, and what followed was a cascade rather than a campaign: Hama, then Homs, then Damascus on 8 December without a battle, as Bashar al-Assad flew to Moscow. The army did not hold anywhere along the corridor. Its patrons could not or would not intervene — Hezbollah broken by its war with Israel, Russia absorbed in Ukraine, Iran's networks unwilling to die for a client whose own forces would not. Within a week Israel had destroyed much of the former state's military assets by air and moved into the Golan buffer zone, and Sednaya prison was opened, converting the Assad era's detention file from documented horror into a public national reckoning.

Breakout from Idlib
The offensive launched from the Idlib pocket and took Aleppo within days against an army that did not hold the northern anchor of the western corridor. The speed of that first result, rather than its scale, is what set everything after it.
The cascade down the corridor
Hama and then Homs fell in succession. On a corridor where the cities are the state and the road between them is the only one, the loss of each position made the next untenable, and no external patron intervened to break the sequence.
Damascus, and the week that followed
Damascus was taken on 8 December without a battle and Assad flew to Moscow. Within the week Israel destroyed much of the former state's military assets by air and moved into the Golan buffer zone, and Sednaya was opened. The transition began with the state's coercive apparatus simultaneously dissolved, destroyed and exposed.

Concluded on 8 December 2024 with the fall of Damascus and the end of fifty-four years of Assad rule. It settled who governs and almost nothing else: the campaign produced a capital, not a state, and left the northeast under a separate authority, the north under Turkish influence, the south under Israeli pressure, the desert insurgency intact and the coercive institutions of the old order dissolved without replacements ready. Every subsequent campaign in this module is an attempt to close one of those gaps.

- The Assad-era Syrian Arab Army — the campaign's opposing force — has no organisation record in this module, because it was dissolved in January 2025 and this module does not maintain force records for structures that no longer exist. It is therefore named in prose here and appears in the lineage of the state forces record rather than as a typed participant.
