Since the 2004 accession NATO has policed Baltic airspace with fighters Allies volunteer on a four-month rotation, under Allied Air Command's direction. It is the module's oldest continuous activity, and the case that separates NATO direction from national command of the aircraft.
This is the mechanism through which the Alliance is continuously present in the airspace where its most frequent friction with Russia occurs, and it is the reason an air command, three operations centres and a set of host air bases sit in this module's Force Atlas. It is also the module's working example of a standing NATO activity that confers direction without transferring command — the distinction that governs every command edge here.

When Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania acceded in March 2004 they had no fighter force with which to police their own airspace, and NATO took on the task. Allies that possess the required capabilities volunteer aircraft, and the responsibility rotates every four months. Participating fighters have been based at Šiauliai in Lithuania since the mission's deployment; since 2014 NATO aircraft have also been based at Ämari in Estonia, and since 2024 Lielvārde in Latvia is capable of hosting them. Allied Air Command at Ramstein oversees the mission with 24/7 command and control from three combined air operations centres whose areas of responsibility overlap; when an interception is required the relevant centre decides from which base aircraft are scrambled. As part of the assurance measures introduced after 2014, Allies supplemented the existing air-policing forces in the Baltic states, deployed additional aircraft to Poland, and augmented the national air-policing capabilities of the Bulgarian and Romanian air forces. Since September 2025 the Eastern Sentry activity has deployed further assets that complement air policing along the flank.

- Scramble and intercept totals are published by some Allies as annual aggregates and by NATO not at all. They are not a Vigil series: counting NATO's responses would measure allied activity, not Russian activity.
- The doctrinal label for the command relationship is not published. NATO says direction and command and control; no source reached uses operational control or operational command. The framework nations' own press material states that national command authority over the aircraft is retained, which is a national statement and is cited as one.
- NATO's air-policing page is dated October 2025 and establishes the host bases and their dates, not which detachment is present now; the module's airbase records say which they carry, and this record inherits that limit.
