- The 336th Brigade's lineage runs from a motor-rifle regiment converted to naval infantry in 1963 and raised to a brigade on 20 November 1979. Committed to the land war from its first weeks — Kherson, then the assault on Mariupol — it followed the pattern this atlas documents for every Russian marine brigade: heavy employment as assault infantry, losses, reconstitution and recommitment. On 22 December 2025 the ministry announced its expansion into a division, one regiment keeping the number 336; regional reporting named it the 120th Guards Naval Infantry Division, a designation not publicly confirmed. Lithuania's 2026 threat assessment corroborates at class level that new naval infantry units are being developed in Kaliningrad.

Russia's defence ministry announced the formation of a new Baltic Fleet naval infantry division on 22 December 2025, expanding the 336th Separate Guards Naval Infantry Brigade at Baltiysk; one of the division's regiments retains the number 336. Reporting gives the designation as the 120th Guards Naval Infantry Division, which has not been publicly confirmed, so the record is not titled by it. Whether the division is manned to establishment is not published. Records of the brigade's employment before that date stand as written.
