The Bundeswehr describes it as the only NATO headquarters with a fixed territorial area of responsibility, the north-eastern flank at the borders of Poland and the three Baltic states; NATO's page names the battlegroups in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland as those it covers.

- Established on 18 September 1999 under a 1998 agreement between the defence ministers of Denmark, Germany and Poland, in the year of Polish accession. After 2014 it became the corps-level node of NATO's forward presence in the north-east, with the Elbląg division formed under it in 2017 and the Ādaži division inaugurated in 2019 and placed under it by the Estonian ministry's account. On 30 June 2026 its responsibility for Estonia and Latvia passed to 1 (German/ Netherlands) Corps, the largest change to this theatre's command picture in the period this module covers.
