Estonia's eastern boundary runs down the Narva river, across Lake Peipus and along its southern shore. For most of its length it is water, which makes it a legible frontier in a region where borders are often lines through forest.

- A river in the north, then one of Europe’s larger lakes, then low, wet, forested country to the south. The lake dominates the middle of the frontier and freezes in winter. The city of Narva sits at the northern end, immediately on the river, with a Russian town on the opposite bank.

- The water is the frontier for most of its length, so crossings are few and fixed. Narva is the principal road and rail crossing point, and its regime is the observable fact about this frontier: the crossing has been closed to vehicles since 1 February 2024, after Russia closed the Ivangorod checkpoint opposite, with pedestrian crossing in daytime only since May 2024, and Estonia's border authorities stated in September 2025 that it would not reopen to vehicles while the war in Ukraine continues. The lake is not a route in any season; it is a gap in the land frontier that both sides work around.

- The lake ices over in winter and the river can freeze at the margins. The practical effect is on civilian movement, fishing and border management rather than anything this module models.

The geography explains why Estonian frontier questions concentrate at a small number of named places rather than spreading along a line, and why Narva specifically recurs in reporting: it is where the crossing, the city and the border coincide. The institutional facts around it are published and few. Estonia hosts the United Kingdom-led forward battlegroup; the Estonian Division and Latvia passed from Multinational Corps Northeast to 1 (German/Netherlands) Corps on 30 June 2026; and Estonia's air force received the module's single confirmed air-defence handover, an IRIS-T SLM fire unit, in June 2026. Estonia is also where the module's strongest hybrid attribution sits: a county court found in 2025 that a January 2024 Tallinn arson had been tasked by Russian military intelligence. This frontier is therefore the place where the module's hybrid, air-defence and forward-presence layers all touch one small piece of ground. Nothing about defensive arrangements, positions or contingencies is described here.

- No border-guard posting, patrol arrangement or surveillance system on either bank is described, and none may be added.
- The Estonian–Russian border treaty signed in 2014 has not been ratified by either parliament as far as this record establishes; the boundary described here is the line administered in practice, not a ratified one.

The Narva crossing regime
Closed to vehicles by decisions on both banks since February 2024. A reopening, a full closure or a change on the Russian side is a published fact, and it is the frontier's one moving part.
