Podsumowanie

Acceded on 29 March 2004 in the largest single enlargement, together with Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia. Membership carries the mutual-defence commitment of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, under which an armed attack against one ally is treated as an attack against them all. Romania hosts a French-led battlegroup and the seats of two multinational headquarters. This record states the membership and its date; it says nothing about how much this state spends, what it contributes, or how reliable any party considers it — none of which membership establishes.

• NATO describes the French-led formation at battlegroup level as of June 2026; the forward-presence record follows that word and this record does not resolve the brigade-level descriptions circulating elsewhere.
• The United States’ March 2026 testimony records that a US brigade combat team previously forward-deployed to Romania was not backfilled; that is a bilateral matter carried on the defence-agreement record and is not a membership fact.
