Podsumowanie

Acceded on 29 March 2004 in the largest single enlargement, together with Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia. Membership carries the mutual-defence commitment of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, under which an armed attack against one ally is treated as an attack against them all. Lithuania hosts a German-led brigade that NATO describes as a permanent military base. This record states the membership and its date; it says nothing about how much this state spends, what it contributes, or how reliable any party considers it — none of which membership establishes.

Skład członkowski jest kręgosłupem tego modułu: każde wysunięte rozmieszczenie, każdy układ dowodzenia i każdy plan wzmocnień na tym teatrze działań istnieje z powodu tego, kto jest stroną tego traktatu, a kto nie.   Traktat założycielski. Artykuł 5 zawiera zobowiązanie do wzajemnej obrony; artykuł 10 to klauzula akcesyjna, na mocy której przystąpili wszyscy późniejsi członkowie.

Co pozostaje nieznane

• Lithuania’s own government hosts are bot-gated; its force structure in this module rests on the legal-acts register, and nothing about its national contribution is added by membership.
• NATO’s description of the German presence as a permanent base is a description of the German arrangement; what Lithuania provides as host is bilateral and unpublished.
