Podsumowanie

With two of four land borders closed, Armenian external trade moves through Georgia or Iran and nowhere else. Georgia carries the northern half: road transit to the Black Sea ports at Poti and Batumi, and the Upper Lars crossing to Russia, through which Armenia's continuing energy, trade and remittance relationship with Russia physically runs. Georgia's own relations with both Armenia and Azerbaijan are correct and its transit role is uncontested by any party, which is what makes the dependence stable rather than fragile. The exposure is not to Georgian intent but to Georgian conditions: a route through a single neighbour is a route with no redundancy, and that neighbour is in the middle of an unresolved argument about its own external orientation.

It is why a signed Armenia–Azerbaijan peace and an open Turkish border would be the largest structural change to Armenia's economy since independence — they would end a thirty-year condition in which every route out of the country depends on the internal politics of one of two neighbours.
