Ukrainian drones and missiles struck the port of Novorossiysk overnight into 12 August 2026, hitting the naval base and port infrastructure. Local officials reported three people killed, including a child, and at least 24 wounded; four industrial enterprises, more than two dozen residential buildings and educational facilities were reported damaged, and the port declared an emergency. Two grain terminals — the Novorossiysk Grain Terminal and NKHP — suspended operations; reporting puts their combined annual export capacity above 15 million tonnes, at a port through which up to a third of Russian grain exports move. Wheat futures rose around three per cent. President Zelensky said Ukrainian forces had targeted air-defence positions, piers and seaport infrastructure and had hit two frigates, a landing ship, a corvette and other vessels; Russia's defence ministry said it had downed 502 drones overnight. Ukrainian drones struck the Baltic oil export port of Ust-Luga on the night of 13–14 August, causing a fire. A Russian strike damaged infrastructure at Odesa port in the same period.

Why it matters. This module has recorded the deep-strike campaign as an attack on Russia's refining tier — the step between crude and usable fuel, and the only place in an oil economy where a shortage was possible at all. Export terminals are a different object with different consequences. The first is that the campaign now reaches revenue directly rather than through the domestic market. The second is that it reaches people who are not part of the war: grain is not a war economy, Russia is the largest wheat exporter, and the buyers are largely in Africa and the Middle East. The price movement is recorded here as an observed market reaction on the day, not as a forecast about food supply — that would be a claim this record cannot support. The civilian casualties are recorded where they fell, on the same principle applied to Nizhnekamsk on 10 August.

The United States, Armenia and Azerbaijan issued a joint statement on 11 August 2026 marking one year since the White House peace summit. It records that engineering surveys for the TRIPP route are under way in Armenia and that Azerbaijan has nearly completed the highway and railway on its side that would connect to it; that Washington and Yerevan have agreed to form a TRIPP Development Company to lead infrastructure development; and that the three governments support building an electricity transmission line through the route. It records US$201 million granted to the Trans-Caspian Enterprise Fund, the lifting of Azerbaijani trade restrictions with nearly 60,000 tonnes of goods moved through Azerbaijan to Armenia, a signed telecommunications agreement, both states joining the US Board of Peace, and the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group. The peace agreement text remains initialled by the two foreign ministers and unsigned. In the same days Azerbaijan reported the first seven kilometres of a 194-kilometre Nakhchivan railway advancing toward the Armenian border, President Aliyev described Nakhchivan as a hub expecting 15 million tonnes of cargo a year once the route operates, and the two states held technical meetings on power transmission, pipelines and railway integration.

Why it matters. This module has recorded TRIPP through paperwork for eighteen months — a declaration in August 2025, an implementation framework in January 2026, a framework agreement and a shareholding in May, a name correction in July. Engineering surveys are the first item in that sequence that occurs on the ground rather than on paper, and a survey is the point at which an alignment stops being notional. That is a real change and the 9 August brief's watch item on TRIPP implementation is closed by it. It is also the only thing in the statement that is. The rest is the three governments' account of their own progress; the two questions that have always governed this file — jurisdiction over passage, and who operates the route — are addressed by none of it; and the treaty is where it was in March 2025. What to watch is a construction decision and an alignment, not another anniversary.

Taiwan's navy and coast guard conducted their first joint anti-blockade exercise on 12 August 2026, escorting a simulated merchant vessel — a Yushan-class landing platform dock standing in for the merchantman — through waters off the east coast to Hualien and Suao, where the cargo was offloaded and moved inland; a minesweeper cleared and marked the channel. The Coast Guard Administration described the purpose as cross-agency coordinated response and maritime defence resilience, and said it was the first time it had run such a drill with the navy. On the same morning, between roughly 06:30 and 09:30, the PLA Navy frigate Honghe and the Indonesian navy frigate KRI I Gusti Ngurah Rai conducted a joint exercise in waters east of Taiwan covering formation manoeuvring, maritime communications and replenishment at sea — the first exercise China has conducted with a foreign navy in those waters and the first it has publicly announced there. Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council called the announcement an infringement of sovereignty and a threat to regional security, and Taipei asked Jakarta to explain its participation; Indonesia said the exercise was not threatening. The US State Department urged Beijing to stop military pressure on Taiwan. Chinese presence east of the island has grown since Beijing began what it calls law-enforcement patrols there in June 2026.

Why it matters. The eastern approaches are where this module's two live questions meet, and the coincidence of dates makes both visible at once. Taiwan's resilience case rests on being resupplied from the side of the island away from the strait, which is what the escort drill rehearsed — and the destinations matter more than the ships, because Hualien and Suao are the ports the case depends on. Beijing's counter-argument is made administratively rather than militarily: not that the eastern approaches can be closed, but that they are not exclusively Taiwan's. Bringing a third state's warship into them changes the character of that claim, because a bilateral exercise implies a normal maritime space in which normal navies train, which is exactly the proposition Taipei disputes. What this does not establish is that Indonesia endorses Beijing's position on Taiwan; Jakarta has not said so, and reading a single passage exercise as a diplomatic alignment would overstate it.
