Swarming assaults, reconnaissance, taxation patrols and dispersal — motorcycles let insurgents mass from nowhere and vanish before air power arrives.

Typical employment

Dispersed approach, brief concentration, immediate dispersal. Two fighters per machine converge on a target from several directions and separate before air power can respond — the pattern that makes insurgent formations hard to fix and harder to strike. Also the routine vehicle of taxation patrols and village blockades in the centre, which is the non-combat use that touches the most civilians: the same mobility that enables an attack enables the standing presence that closes a market or a field. Anything larger than a raid still requires trucks.

How the system is commonly used, at the level of published analysis — never a procedure, a loadout or an engagement envelope.

Stärken

Goes where vehicles cannot; near-zero logistics; blends into civilian movement, which is precisely why bans punish civilians more than fighters.

No protection or payload; seasonal terrain limits; massing for large assaults still requires trucks.

• Government motorcycle bans across central Mali attempted to suppress the capability and are documented as having fallen more heavily on civilian movement than on fighters — an adaptation that produced a humanitarian cost without removing the capability.
