Light armoured mobility and fire support for airborne and air-assault infantry; in this war, employed by the VDV in ordinary mechanised assaults at Hostomel, in Donbas and at Kursk, where its thin armour meets artillery, mines and drones designed for heavier vehicles.

Air-droppable with its crew, amphibious, and — in the BMD-4M — armed with a 100 mm gun and 30 mm cannon that give a light vehicle unusual firepower; the mobility that made the VDV Russia's rapid-reaction force.

Aluminium armour that rifle-calibre heavy machine guns and any anti-tank weapon defeat, a design premise — airborne assault behind enemy lines — that the war has not allowed, and documented losses among the highest per vehicle of any Russian family; the BMD-4M is expensive and produced slowly. Dokumentierter Einsatz im Konflikt

Documented from the Hostomel airfield assault of February 2022 onward, in the VDV's Donbas battles, in the 2023 Zaporizhzhia defence and in the Kursk fighting of 2024–2025; open-source trackers record losses of every variant, and captured BMD-4M appear in Ukrainian service. Ukrainian BMD-1/2 use is documented in the air-assault brigades. Counts are not reproduced here.
