Romania's geography is organised by two features: the Carpathian arc curving through the middle of the country, and the Danube reaching the Black Sea through a broad delta. The first constrains movement within the country; the second is where the theatre meets the Ukrainian war most directly.

- Mountains through the centre, with movement channelled through a limited number of passes and valleys. To the south and east, plain: the lower Danube basin and the Dobruja. The delta itself is a vast wetland of channels, reed beds and shifting islands, with the Ukrainian border running through it.

- Movement across Romania is shaped by the mountain arc, which separates the western and central regions from the Black Sea plain. The Danube is a navigable inland waterway reaching deep into central Europe and is also an international boundary for much of its length. In the delta, the border and the water are the same thing in many places.

- Mountain passes carry winter conditions; the delta floods seasonally. Neither is unusual for the latitude.
