- Established in September 2021 as the Navy's first unmanned task force, Task Force 59 was the Fifth Fleet's answer to a surveillance problem: too much water and too few ships. It deployed unmanned surface vessels and aerial systems across the Gulf and its approaches, ran the Navy's largest unmanned exercises, and became the model the service copied elsewhere. Its relevance to this module is structural — it is the organisation through which the American fleet watches the water the strait's commercial risk depends on — and it is the counterpart, at the other end of the technological scale, of the Guard Navy's small-craft mass. What it operates, where and in what numbers is not recorded here.
