Zusammenfassung

Qatar established relations with Iran in 1971, downgraded them briefly in 2016 with its neighbours, and returned its ambassador to Tehran in 2017 during the blockade imposed on it by Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain. Since then the channel has been continuously active and is now among the most consequential in the region. It has survived a war in which Qatar's own gas export complex was struck twice and roughly seventeen per cent of its liquefaction capacity was destroyed. Qatar's prime minister, who is also its foreign minister, met Iran's president on 27 August 2026, and Qatar held talks with Iran on the future of navigation through the strait in the same month.

Warum es wichtig ist

Qatar is simultaneously the state with the most to lose from a closed strait, the host of the largest United States air facility in the region, and the party Tehran will still talk to. That combination is what gives Qatari mediation standing, and it is the reason this relationship is a structural feature of the system rather than a diplomatic courtesy.
