Sand and rock desert giving way southward to Sahelian scrub. The Adrar des Ifoghas massif in the Kidal region is the one substantial relief feature: a broken granite upland of valleys and caves, historically used as sanctuary and the object of the 2013 French campaign in the north. Elsewhere the ground is overwhelmingly flat and open, with settlement concentrated at water.
