Its own mission statement is to deter hostile intent against NATO and to provide corps-level command and control of NATO land operations, in crisis or war, in support of the eastern flank's security architecture; NATO names the battlegroups in Bulgaria and Romania as those it covers.

- Formed in 2020, five years after the Bucharest divisional headquarters, as the second NATO Force Structure corps on the eastern flank after Szczecin and the first in the south-east — the corps echelon that the Black Sea end of the flank had lacked since the 2016 tailored forward presence was announced. Its own site places it on a chain running from SHAPE through JFC Naples and LANDCOM, and NATO's page of 17 June 2026 lists it with the Bucharest division as covering the two southern battlegroups. The Chair of the Military Committee visited it in May 2026 and described its mission in the corps' own words.
