- NATO's structure page lists the command as one of the three single-service commands of the adapted command structure, the maritime successor to the regional naval headquarters closed after the 2002 Prague decision to organise by function rather than geography. It has directed the standing naval forces from Northwood since the 2012 consolidation, according to the German Navy's account. Since January 2025 it has worked under Joint Force Command Brunssum on Baltic Sentry, and in February 2026 the North Atlantic Council agreed that the United States would newly take up its leadership, to be implemented with the scheduled rotation of personnel.

NATO describes them as a continuous, credible and agile maritime capability that can be deployed rapidly in crisis, and the German Navy as ready forces continuously available to NATO in peacetime as in crisis. They are the only permanently constituted multinational forces in this theatre's maritime domain, and the mine countermeasures groups are the capability nearest the seabed-infrastructure question this module tracks.

- The standing forces are small — a few frigates or destroyers and a supply ship, or a few mine countermeasures vessels and a support ship — and their ships are national contributions on rotating tours, so continuity is a standing national decision rather than an alliance asset. Baltic Sentry is led by the joint force command at Brunssum, not from Northwood. The command's own site is closed to tools, so what it says about itself beyond NATO's structure page is not carried here.
