Türkiye organised the factions that became the Syrian National Army from 2016, and they have served since as the garrison and administration forces of the northern zones, as participants in operations against the YPG and in the December 2024 offensive that ended the Assad era. They also carry a heavily documented record of abuses in Afrin and elsewhere, which is the principal reason the Afrin precedent is cited against Turkish intentions by Kurdish communities. Under the transition the factions are being folded into the new national military structures at a pace and depth that varies by faction — so the sponsorship is neither intact nor ended, and the integration test is whether the state absorbs them or inherits them.
