The far north of Norway and Finland meets the Kola peninsula, the most militarily significant part of the Russian Arctic. The defining characteristics are distance, sparse infrastructure and weather rather than difficult relief.

- Open fell and tundra inland, a deeply indented coast with fjords and islands in Norway, and forest thinning to tundra in Finnish Lapland. Settlement is very sparse, roads are few, and the coast is the principal line of connection.

- Distance is the constraint. The road network is thin and largely coastal in Norway; inland routes are few. Movement by sea along the coast is the practical connection, and Bodø’s role as an air operations centre reflects how far the northern airspace is from anywhere else.

- Extreme and defining: polar night and midnight sun, sea ice further east, severe winter weather and a short summer. Seasonal conditions govern what is possible here more directly than in any other part of this theatre except the Finnish frontier.

Explains why the northern sector is run as its own problem, with its own air operations centre and its own command arrangements. Vigil describes the geography and the published command architecture. It publishes nothing about Russian northern forces beyond what allied government assessments state at class level, and nothing at all about their positions.
