Ein palästinensischer Aufstand gegen die israelische Herrschaft beginnt in Gaza und breitet sich auf das Westjordanland aus. Im Dezember 1987 gründet die Gaza-Führung der Muslimbruderschaft die Islamische Widerstandsbewegung, Hamas, außerhalb der PLO.

The uprising moved the centre of Palestinian politics into the territories and, with Jordan's disengagement from the West Bank in July 1988, left the PLO as the only Palestinian interlocutor. Hamas's founding outside the PLO is the origin of the split that has defined Palestinian governance since 2007.
