  Integrating into the Ministry of Defence under the 30 January 2026 agreement as one division formed from three SDF brigades, with a Kobani brigade attached to an Aleppo-affiliated division. Commander Mazloum Abdi stated on 20 August 2026 that the institutional integration phase was complete; Damascus welcomed the statement as an acknowledgement of the SDF's dissolution while officials cautioned that implementation on the ground was unfinished, and reporting in the same period described Hasakah province as still under a divided administration. The two characterisations are incompatible, the constitutional file is open, and the final command relationship is therefore still not an established fact.

Light infantry, enabled from outside. The force's decade of campaigning was conducted as dispersed infantry manoeuvre on light vehicles, supported by coalition air power, surveillance and special-forces enabling that supplied the reach and the precision it did not hold itself. Against a territorial adversary this produced a methodical, city-by-city approach — isolation, then clearance, accepting time and destruction rather than casualties. Against an insurgency it became a static commitment: fixed presence in towns and along the river, custody of a large detention and camp system, and a policing relationship with Arab-majority areas administered by a Kurdish-led structure. Since 2019 the force has spent far more of its effort holding and guarding than manoeuvring.

A disciplined, ideologically cohesive Kurdish core inside a broader multi-ethnic umbrella, with a single recognised commander and a centralised style that outside partners consistently described as reliable. The cohesion is real at the core and considerably weaker at the edges: Arab component and tribal formations were integrated on terms that depended on local bargains, and those bargains proved conditional.

أين ينهار هذا التعميم

The generalisation fails in three ways worth stating. First, "the SDF" describes a Kurdish core and a set of Arab and tribal formations whose behaviour was never the same: the January 2026 defections showed that the umbrella's cohesion was a bargain, not a doctrine, and treating the whole as one force misreads what happened. Second, the partner-enabled characterisation is historical from April 2026 — how the force operates without coalition enablers has not been observed, and nothing here should be read as a prediction that it operates the same way. Third, custody and policing are a commitment rather than a method, and describing them as doctrine risks dignifying an inherited liability as a choice.
