نبذة

The alliance's own airborne early-warning force at Geilenkirchen — one of the few military capabilities NATO owns and operates itself rather than borrowing from members. Its commander reports to SACEUR and NATO lists it under Allied Command Operations.

المنطقة العامة للنشاط
NATO Air Base Geilenkirchen, Germany, the main operating base and headquarters, with the E-3A component there and an E-3D component at Waddington in the United Kingdom according to NATO's structure page.
تاريخ بارز
The joint acquisition of eighteen aircraft was approved in December 1978 and delivered between 1982 and 1985; NATO describes the E-3A component as the first multinational flying unit the alliance established. Sixteen nations take part through a programme management organisation that reports to the North Atlantic Council, while the force commander reports to SACEUR. At the 2026 summit eleven allies announced the joint procurement of up to ten GlobalEye aircraft as the successor, and NATO expects the E-3A to retire soon after 2035.
نقاط القوة
Ownership. Almost everything else in this module is national and lent; this force is alliance property with an alliance crew, and NATO's topic page describes it as one of the few military assets the alliance owns and operates itself. It supports Air Policing and the Sentry activities without any ally having to decide to contribute.
مواطن القصور
A fleet of fourteen E-3A aircraft that entered service in the 1980s, with a successor announced but not delivered. NATO's page notes that the aircraft are expected to retire soon after 2035 and describes the replacement as a mix of GlobalEye and a system-of-systems approach; the transition is the structural risk. The force's own site is closed to tools.

NATO Airborne Early Warning and Control Force, Geilenkirchen: A PUBLISHED SEAT and nothing more. It is not a command-post position, a wartime location, a current unit presence, a deployment or an area of operations, and the marker it points at is generalised to settlement level.
