One of the twelve states that signed the North Atlantic Treaty in Washington on 4 April 1949, so its membership is not an accession but the treaty itself. Membership carries the mutual-defence commitment of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, under which an armed attack against one ally is treated as an attack against them all. The Netherlands seats Joint Force Command Brunssum and co-frames 1 (German/Netherlands) Corps.
