- The East China Sea and the Taiwan Strait, and increasingly the waters east of Taiwan
- Bemerkenswerte Geschichte
- Known for decades as the East Sea Fleet and still widely called that, this is the naval organisation whose area has always included the strait. Its significance in the current system is presence rather than any single capability: Taiwan's defence ministry reports detected naval vessels around the island as a daily figure, and the most consistent trend in those reports since 2022 has been the extension of activity from the strait itself to the waters east of Taiwan — the side that was historically treated as depth. The theatre's exercise announcements, from the August 2022 responses through Joint Sword-2024, Strait Thunder-2025A and Justice Mission-2025, are made by the theatre headquarters, and the naval component is the part of them a reader actually sees counted.

- Proximity to the theatre, a service behind it with the largest shipbuilding output in the world, and the ability to generate visible activity at short notice — which is a political capability as much as a military one.

- Anti-submarine warfare is consistently assessed by outside observers as a relative weakness, joint command performance is untested, and hull counts are a poor proxy for capability which this module declines to use as one. Vigil records that activity is reported and publishes no vessel counts by class, no dispositions, no routes and no readiness.

The East Sea Fleet, one of the PLA Navy's three fleets, was reconstituted as the naval component of the Eastern Theater Command in the 2016 reorganisation, moving operational command from the service to the joint theatre headquarters while the service retained force generation.

Schlüsselereignisse
Justice Mission-2025: die größte Übung seit 2022, und die nächstgelegene
Das PLA Eastern Theater Command kündigte am Morgen des 29. Dezember 2025 gemeinsame Übungen mit dem Codenamen „Justice Mission-2025“ an, an denen Einheiten von Heer, Marine, Luftwaffe und Raketentruppe in den Gewässern und im Luftraum um Taiwan beteiligt waren. Es war die achte große Übung um die Insel seit August 2022; sie dauerte, bis das Kommando spät am 31. Dezember ihr Ende erklärte, mit der stärksten Aktivität an den ersten beiden Tagen. Taiwans Verteidigungsministerium meldete am ersten Tag 89 erfasste Flugzeuge und 28 Marineschiffe — davon 13 der chinesischen Küstenwache statt der Marine — und am zweiten Tag 71 Flugzeuge sowie weitere 15 Küstenwachschiffe; der 29. Dezember war der zweitgrößte eintägige ADIZ-Einflug seit Beginn der Aufzeichnungen. Die angekündigten Sperrgebiete wurden teils über Navigationswarnungen des Eastern Theater Command und teils über die Maritime Safety Administration der Volksrepublik veröffentlicht, ein weiteres Gebiet nur per Funk angekündigt. Zur Gesamtzahl gehen die Angaben auseinander: Taiwans Verteidigungsministerium nannte sieben ausgewiesene Zonen, eine Zusammenstellung zählt acht.
