The waters around Taiwan carry a substantial share of global container traffic, including much of the trade between East Asia and both Europe and North America. Taiwan's own trade is entirely seaborne or airborne. The same corridors carry the undersea cables serving the island. Commercial and military traffic occupy the same water continuously, which is the structural fact this chain rests on.

No vessel was interfered with and the restrictions were short-lived, but the commercial response was immediate and did not wait for any assessment of whether the risk was real. Coast guard patrolling and inspection around Kinmen since February 2024 has applied a law-enforcement framing to presence in contested waters, without extending to vessels bound for Taiwan's main ports.

The exposed quantities are transit time, freight rates and war-risk insurance premiums, and they do not all move together. Rerouting east of Taiwan or through the southern channels adds days and fuel cost rather than making voyages impossible, which is why disruption here expresses itself as a price rather than as a stoppage; that response is fast and is documented, and in 2022 it followed the announcement rather than any verified risk. Insurance behaves differently. Marine hull war-risk cover reprices when the Joint War Committee — the Lloyd's and London company market body that maintains the Listed Areas — adds a water, at which point standing war clauses trigger cancellation-and-reinstatement mechanics and premiums are negotiated per voyage as a percentage of hull value. That did NOT happen in August 2022: Taiwanese waters were not listed at all, and no listing has been recorded since. So insurance is a threshold instrument rather than a continuously sensitive one, and the threshold has not been crossed. For Taiwan itself there is no rerouting option, because the destination is the island.
