Mali developments — 26 July 2026
Another ambush between Anéfis and Gao inflicted heavy but unverified losses on Malian and allied Russian forces; days later Washington was reported to be considering strikes against JNIM, while Bamako said it had received no proposal and insisted that any partner respect Malian sovereignty.
The developments
An army convoy was ambushed between Anéfis and Gao, around the Tabrichat area, with JNIM and the FLA reported involved. A rebel-linked source claimed more than 50 Malian soldiers and allied Russian personnel were killed or captured; that casualty number is not independently verified. Mali's army said retaliatory strikes killed at least 20 insurgents.
Why it matters. This was not merely another attack on an isolated position. It again targeted the road system through which Bamako and Africa Corps must sustain their northern presence, reinforcing the conclusion that control of the corridor remains temporary and expensive.
The Washington Post reported that US officials were considering military options against JNIM. No strike order, agreement or final decision has been announced. Mali's foreign minister said the government had received no official proposal; he did not rule out cooperation, but said any partner must respect Mali's sovereignty.
Why it matters. A strike decision would return the United States to a direct kinetic role in Mali and create a new relationship with a government aligned with Russia. Airstrikes could damage leadership and infrastructure but would not by themselves restore control of roads, towns or border systems.
