يحتل طلاب وناشطون الهيئة التشريعية في تايوان أكثر من ثلاثة أسابيع احتجاجًا على طريقة التعامل مع اتفاقية لتجارة الخدمات عبر المضيق. وتُجمَّد الاتفاقية، وتعيد الحركة تشكيل السياسة التايوانية.

The Sunflower Movement marked the point at which further economic integration became politically unsellable in Taiwan regardless of its economic merits. It is the clearest evidence that the engagement strategy had run into a public opinion constraint, and it fed directly into the 2016 change of government.
